Understanding the Medical Marijuana Laws in New Orleans

In 1978, medical marijuana was approved in New Orleans, Louisiana. However, the sale of flowers began on January 1, 2022.

Adult cannabis use will be decriminalized on August 1, 2021. According to House Bill 652 (H 652), possessing anything weighing 14 grams or less—roughly half an ounce—is always a misdemeanor, with a maximum fine of $100 and no mandatory jail time.

A 30-day supply is allowed for medical patients, and the amount is established by a physician. Marijuana is not legal for recreational use in New Orleans.
Growing marijuana plants is also illegal in New Orleans. Louisiana law restricts the cultivation of medical marijuana to licensed establishments; therefore, only licensed establishments will be permitted to cultivate medical marijuana. Marijuana cultivation for any purpose is still illegal under federal law.

Furthermore, New Orleans, Louisiana, does not recognize the medical marijuana programs of other states and does not share reciprocity with them.
